A powerful book. It gets dark pretty quick. Then, unbelievably, darker still. Then…light. Sarah and Landon find themselves tested everywhere they turn. It is interesting that these forces of evil are so focused on them. I wonder why. I do find it interesting that demons in literature seem to focus on small victories instead of a more widespread approach. Probably because they can’t come out of the shadows and must work within limitations that God doesn’t have. I just find that interesting. This was a very exciting and gripping book!
I love that each book is an extension of the previous one, following on faultlessly. After his baptism, Landon settles down with Sarah, in the same diner that started it all, where he now fits in, he belongs, he feels comfortable. He's trying to keep the past events firmly from his mind, but there's a little worm burrowing, digging up questions. He knows too much, too many languages, too many past events, too many biblical references, but he's no closer to knowing who he actually is, what he actually is, so many gaps in his memory, it all remains elusive. With Saran's imminent departure to college, more questions arise. And then a stranger comes to town....Merely by his cryptic words and touch, memories suddenly surface and Landon's tenuous grasp on peace is shattered.
But the plot thickens, seriously thickens, the evil Marcus schemes a new way to get to Landon and Sarah. What appears to be innocuous and helpful, isn't, like Vanessa, Sarah's new roommate at the university, like Prof Whitman offering Landon to complete his studies, shoo, I wanted to scream out "DANGER! DANGER!" What's worse is that Landon knows something isn't kosher, not with Vanessa and not with Dr Whitman but, a very apt sentence in the book states "curiousity drives the wounded mind" and Landon's is, very wounded. Gosh do I love his character! How wonderfully complete all these characters 3, ALL of them, besides me being completely taken with Landon and Sarah, I have a soft spot for Zacharias, there's something special about him, he's an awesome voice of reason.
Now separated, as was the wont of the "others", a multi targeted approach on both fronts, I really enjoyed the realistic uncertainty of Sarah and Landon, the trying to piece together what was thrown at them, the trying to be objective, standing up for what they believed in, the way their faith was challenged at every turn, the seeds of doubt sown trying to take hold, but being blasted by the strength of their faith. And when Mephisto re-emerged, oh my hat! No words, just pounding! So, once more, Sarah and Landon need to bring in big guns, need to try get rid of him and GOSH does the author get the adrenaline pumping! In this convoluted plot, which transcends beyond the classic "good vs evil", the mystery of Landon's past, the determination of Lucifer to "have" Sarah, converge into a mighty battle. There are so many messages I see personally through a Judah Lamb book, not subliminal messages trying to convince me but thought provoking, needing to stop and let it wash over me, much as Landon and Sarah do. But the joy, the sheer emotions I feel, this beacon of light, encasing me.
Phew! So much happens in this book, which is kind of normal for this author but his storytelling prowess, oh my goodness, magnificent! The blend of theology, religion and fantasy is fascinatingly compelling, I betcha your heart rate will be elevated, I betcha your jaw will unhinge....Each time I read a Judah Lamb book, I feel faith strengthening, I feel a renewed sense of hope. His flowing prose is riveting, it sucks me in like a whale sucks in plankton. Yes, there are many biblical, yes, there are many frantically intense scenes but these books are uplifting, inspiring, I always come away feeling whole, feeling restored. In the ratrace of todays world, with all the strife around us, with all the problems one faces, after a read such as this, even though I'm aware every individual takes away something different from a read, I feel cleansed, invigorated, at peace. This quote really resonates "Without truth, righteousness falters, faith wavers". I am waiting with baited breath for the next book!
Strongest book in the series. The author has the protagonists, Landon and Sara, going back to school. They are not putting the past behind them but trying to move forward.
But evil has not gone away, and much of what they see/experience is not what it seems.
Great blend of teleological discussion (Judah really is a gifted scholar) and the practical battle between faith and the secular/liberal push (especially in academia) to discredit opposing beliefs. It is particularly interesting when Sarah expresses her faith – as is all-too-familiar now, the response from academics is to treat her like an ignorant child for not seeing their way.
Complex and thoughtful – interesting discussion material with others I know.
Landon and Sarah enthusiastically return to their studies. Sarah starts at Kansas University; Landon takes two of the three courses online he needed in order to graduate from St. Thomas. Their instructors have no interest, if not a negative interest, in the Light of Christianity. What ki d of Shadows are involved?
How much trouble can there be? Do you really need to ask? This is the story of Landon and Sarah. They have already seen the Shadows and have managed to escape with the help of friends. Will their friends be enough to help them against this assault?
As Landon and Sarah both decide to return to their studies, and accept that they will live apart for a while, darkness attacks them again. Seems that they are both targetted once more, and that both professors and fellow students are trying to do their best to undermine their beliefs, and throw a wedge in their relationship. Mephisto is back at work, doing his utmost to get his old vessel back, seems he cannot accept that Landon has since his baptism become even stronger in his faith in Christ. When an overwhelming attack of the dark against the light takes place at Sarah's university they know that they cannot prevail on their own so call in the big guns. Their old friend and mentor, as well as the priest they'd met in Rome, who was an old colleague of Landon, and is now an exorcist are called to their aid. The battle is massive, but it becomes revolutionary as students who were former disbelievers, and a university which was totally secular, turns to prayer groups and a rise in faith. Seems God really works in mysterious ways. This battle might be won, but the devil does not rest, and both Landon and Sarah know they have to remain vigilant for the next attack. This christian thriller is riveting, this book is very dark, and the exorcism is scary, and I am dying to read the next book in this compelling series.
